MONDAY -January 25, 2016
- Introduce spelling-vocabulary words. Students are responsible for writing their own sentences. (Copy of study guide can be accessed below notes.) Study guides are due Friday, 1/29. ** Test will be Friday, 1/29.
- Of Mice and Men book group, read through Chapter 4 by Tuesday, 1/26.
- The Grapes of Wrath book group, read through Chapter 6 by Friday, 1/29.

TUESDAY - January 26, 2016
The Grapes of Wrath book group students need to sign up for breakfast meeting scheduled Monday, February 1 at 7:00 am, so I will know how many to prepare for.
- Read AR360 Article "10 Things You May Not Know About The Dust Bowl." Discuss, comparing and contrasting to fictions and nonfiction background that has been built from the books: Dust to Eat, Out of the Dust, Of Mice and Men, and The Grapes of Wrath.
- Read p60, Out of the Dust, "The Accident." Then, using the smart board, take notes, step by step as students follow along as to how the accident happened which caused Ma to become burned over 90% of her body.

8.RN.2.3: Analyze how a text makes connections and distinctions among individuals, events and ideas.

- Introduce parallelism in text.
- Parallelism - an arrangement in the text that one element of equal importance with another is similarly developed and phrased.----Parallelism from Out of the Dust: "Ma ran across the kitchen out the porch door, screaming for Daddy."

- Parallelism will be further reviewed in Steinbeck's novella, The Pearl.
- Using notes from Thursday, students will begin drafting a summary of the accident that took place on pp60-61 in Out of the Dust.

REMINDER: Spelling-Vocabulary Test - Friday 1/29
- Students need to complete a summary with notes from pp60-61 of Out of the Dust, "The Accident."
- The Grapes of Wrath group will be dismissed to the library for reading and writing work. They also have the following post to complete on Google by 1/29: John Steinbeck continues to intersperse minute detail about actions of humans, descriptions of humans, the weather, inanimate objects (corn stalk, leaf, humming of semi tires), and the like. Pick one of these locations in the text -retelling it verbatim, if you like, and add a comment or two of your thoughts about Steinbeck's attention to detail.
- Of Mice and Men book group will stay in the room and review the Character Connection Chart on the blackboard.

- Collect Spelling-Vocabulary Study Guides and administer Spelling-Vocabulary Test, Dust Bowl & Depression #1. (The spell-vocabulary test can be accessed below these notes.)
- Students will complete summary from notes of accident on pp60-61 of Out of the Dust.
